The ability of trans- cultural communication is the keyword of current concepts of foreign language teaching. A necessary precondition of such a concept is, of course, the comparison of native and foreign reality, that is often only displayed in the form of stereotyped behaviour patterns in textbook dialogues. In teaching foreign literature, however, the literary text and its inherent strangeness of topics and values can question preconceived opinions, open new, yet unknown perspectives and broaden the individual horizon with respect to perception and motivation. By drawing upon literary texts foreign language teaching focussing on the hermeneutics of the 'strange' and alien elements of the foreign culture tries to achieve a more profound self- awareness of the learner and a more complex understanding of the foreign culture
